Growing Calendar for Tigridia pavonia 'Alba Grandiflora' - Bulbs
Delivery: Early March to Late May
Enjoy the bold and attractive flowers of Tigridia pavonia Alba Grandiflora, an exotic-looking member of the lily family that blooms in full sun even in the UK. Every flower shows off three large and perfectly-spaced broad white petals with mottled purple bases and a large style (the female reproduction spike) protruding from the centre.
Plant these great-value bulbs in containers (we recommend about three in every 30cm (12in) diameter) in your garden and fill the containers with a special-formulated bulb compost, positioning them in a sunny position on the patio or balcony where these exotic-looking summer bulbs will flower happily.
Alternatively place at the front of hot borders (these are flower beds filled with red, yellow and orange flowers like dahlias, lantanas and cannas) that have rich yet free-draining soil. If your soil is shallow and poor we recommend you add a bag of Organic Farmyard Manure for about every four square metres. This improves the structure, moisture levels and texture of the soil.
If you are looking for displays that last longer than one season we recommend you dig up the bulbs in November if it starts getting frosty outdoors. Wash off the soil around the bulbs and leave the cleaned bulbs to dry in the sun for a few hours. Place in a crate or box lined with newspaper and bury the bulbs in dry compost to keep the bulbs from drying out completely without getting too wet. Overwinter in the greenhouse or in a dry shed.
