Growing Calendar for Spigelia Marilandica - Bare Root Perennial x1
Delivery: Early January to Late March
Grow this variety that has firework-like flowers in any spot of your garden in good, rich soil. Fondly called Indian pink, the flowers look like jester hats on account of the red and yellow petals.
Similar in appearance to fuchsias this variety is happy in full sun where it would look great with green and red grasses like imperata ‘Red Baron’ or red phormiums. It is equally happy in part sun beneath small ornamental trees and would complement the evergreen red leaves of barberries.
Grow 3 plants per square metre (square yard) for an impactful display.
In September pick off dead flowers and stems and feed the roots with some rich fertiliser. The following year Spigelia will return with more flowering stems.
