Growing Calendar for Raspberry Canes - Sugana x6 - Primocane
Delivery: Early November to Late August
Grow raspberry Sugana in your kitchen garden no matter what the size; they are compact in growth and upright so suit a small area or a row on your allotment.
This impressive variety produces a small crop in its first autumn. Leave the fruiting stems in the ground and they will crop again in the following summer on the same stems. From then on, treat the plants as floricanes, cutting the stems after fruiting in mid-summer and training the new leafy new stems up for the following season.
This high yielding variety can consistently produce 3kg (6 1/2 lbs) of fruit per cane every year. Having a reliable regular shape, and firm to the touch they are easy to harvest without squashing them.
With the double cropping potential, it beats most of the other primocane varieties on the market, and with its strong, upright habit, it makes them also ideal for growing in pots or containers.
On receipt, please unpack your plants as soon as possible. If you cannot plant these bare rooted canes immediately or if the ground is waterlogged or frozen then place the canes in a large bucket and cover the roots with some moist compost. Before planting please soak the canes in a bucket of water for a few hours.
Raspberries prefer moisture retentive but free draining soil that can be slightly acidic. It is best to work in plenty of organic matter before planting. For best results plant in a position that is in full sun but sheltered.
Ensure the soil is fertile by applying a pre-planting fruit fertiliser. During the growing season apply a slow release fertiliser and mulch with well-rotted manure. During the summer regularly apply a liquid general purpose fertiliser. Ensure the plants are kept watered throughout the growing season.
Canes should ideally be planted in rows at 45cm intervals. Rows should ideally be 1.8m apart.
When planting your Sugana canes, do not cut them back to ground level; instead leave the short canes intact. These will produce side shoots in the spring that will form the fruiting laterals/stems for your crop next autumn.
Raspberry Sugana is a particularly versatile variety and is the best available for ''double cropping''. This means that, as per normal autumn varieties, Sugana will fruit on the new season''s growth between late August and October. However unlike traditional primocanes, if you leave these stems intact i.e do not prune then they will re-crop as floricanes early next summer. In the meantime new growth will appear in the spring giving you the autumn crop.
After the second autumn crop, you will then have both new and old canes. The oldest canes now having now fruited twice. This is when you should start pruning the oldest growth, leaving the freshly fruited Primocanes to become floricanes for next summer.
Keep picking the raspberries to encourage the canes to continue to produce more fruit.
