Introduce Ranunculus hederaceus (ivy-leaved crowfoot) for your pond for colour every year. Every May and June white and yellow buttercup-like flowers come out on stems that spread just below the pond surface. This offers welcome safety and shelter from the sun in summer for fish and other aquatic life like frogs and toads.
The surrounding leaves of the flowers are like little clovers or geranium leaves, making an attractive backdrop. Deeper down the leaves are fern-like and the leaves make a great breeding ground for pond snails and newts. They also give off oxygen, vital for clear ponds and healthy aquatic life.
Grow your Ranunculus hederaceus plant at the pond-side as a marginal and let the stems creep towards the pond water to flower. Alternatively plant in a pond pot and submerge in the pond up to a depth of 30cm (12in).
