Growing Calendar for Onion Seeds - Tosca
Delivery: Early September to Late August
Large elongated onions are extra-easy to cut and prepare on account of their unusual yet handy torpedo shape.
In January-March sow thinly 1cm (1/2in) deep in clean trays or modules of firm pre-watered compost. Place in warmth 10-15°C (50-60°F) and keep moist at all times.
In February-March sow thinly into pre-watered soil 1cm (1/2in) deep, 10cm (4in) apart in rows 30cm (12in) apart. Keep soil moist at all times.
Plant out in April 10cm (4in) apart in rows 20cm (8in) apart.
Harvest onions as leaves yellow and wilt over in July to August. Carefully lift with a fork on a dry day.
Lift onions and spread out to dry once tops have gone over naturally before storing for winter use.
