Enjoy harvesting the onions of Hylander in July for full-flavoured onions that taste great in home cooking. Easy to grow they are unlikely to succumb to mildew that can be a plight to other onion varieties, dashing your hard work and potential harvests.
Prepare your soil in the late-winter simply by creating a free-draining soil (add horticultural sand if your soil is heavy at a rate of a shovel to every square metre (square yard.)) Add a sprinkling of pre-planting Onion, Garlic and Shallot Feed to turn over into the soil and it’s good to plant or sow in from April.
How to sow:
Sow indoors or outdoors to suit your vegetable plot and whether you have a greenhouse to grow seedlings on.
If you have a greenhouse sow seeds indoors in January or February into clean trays or singly in individual pots filled with moist compost specially formulated to grow on seedlings. Sow 1cm (1/2in) deep and put your pots somewhere with an ambient temperature of 20°C (68°F) until transplanting. Plant out from March to May once the spring starts in earnest.
Alternatively sow outdoors March to April 1cm (1/2in) deep on a moist seed bed 10cm (4in) apart. Water regularly. We recommend that you cover the seeds the seedlings with a horticultural fleece cover if there is still quite a chill in the air.
