A container-friendly perennial leafy crop, easy to grow for leaves over the whole summer which we recommend you pick little and often for an on-going supply. The young leaves are sweeter and tender while the larger leaves offer more of a bite.
Spinach-like herb that is resistant to mildew unlike regular spinach- great news for home-growers experiencing unpredictable summers of off-and-on rainfall and sunshine which can bring mildew on suddenly.
Rarely succumbing to pests like slugs it’s a great contender for gardeners in wet areas of the country like the South West and North West where slugs come out in big numbers when it’s damp.
We recommend you grow New Zealand spinach in a sunny site and it copes well in drought conditions too, although moist soil is its favourite. Pinch leaves or top 10cm of stems, which encourages plenty of side shoots and eat in salads or cook as you would with regular spinach. In winter, bring your plants indoors to rest over the winter and bring outdoors again the following spring.
Please unpack the plants as soon as you receive them and sit them in a tray of shallow water if they appear to have dried out in transit.
