Growing Calendar for Male fern Dryopteris filix-mas - 9cm Potted Shrub
Delivery: Early March to Early September
Get male ferns into your garden for that extra character. The leaves develop into impressive fronds. So handsome and well-performing are the leaves the Royal Horticultural Society gave this variety a much-deserved Award of Garden Merit.
Hardy in the UK to low temperatures male fern Dryopteris filix mas thrives in gardens up and down the country. Not only does the male fern show off impressive leaves it offsets other flowers nearby that suit shady conditions like rhododendrons.
Ideal for adding character to parts of the garden that get part to full shade like beneath garden trees or in north-facing flower beds. The leaves uncurl gracefully from the bottom of plants from spring and look great as they grow with surrounding spring-flowering bulbs.
Though Dryopteris will grow in dry shade it performs better in moist soils. You can add soil improver like rich compost which makes the existing soil moister and with a better structure.
