This Italian favourite has an upright habit and large, bright red leaves accentuated with pure white veins. The colour becomes deeper as the weather gets colder.
Use the hearts raw in salads, or cut into quarters, brush olive oil and grill, or bake with Parmesan cheese for a delicious gratin.
Sow Jun-Aug and harvest Oct-Dec.
Chunchy in salads or cook as a vegetable.
Sow Outdoors: July-September thinly ½in (1cm) deep in direct harvest location. Keep soil moist at all times. Prefers full sun.
Thin Out: 12in (30cm) apart,
Harvest: October-December when the centre is feels firm.
Seed sown later is less bitter
Very Good germination rate.
Planted two rows again in prepared seed bed. Only about half the seeds have germinated which is a bit disappointing
100% germination , they are grown under glass to keep them clean and away from slugs in a wet climate
