Growing Calendar for Eucalyptus gunnii Cider Gum - 3L Potted Tree
Delivery: Early November to Late April
The Cider Gum is a great garden tree to invest in whether you grow it in a 40cm (16in) container for a 3-4m (10-13ft) high tree, or grow it directly in a bed to grow into a high tree. All silvery leaves catch the sun attractively on this evergreen tree with elegant branches surrounded by a white and green patchy bark. Little flowers appear in late winter too to give your tree that extra impact.
Happy in dry conditions your Cider Gum tree is perfect for drier parts of the UK, though this great tree is equally happy in wetter areas too. As trees, Eucalyptus gunnii (Cider Gum) make great wind breaks, useful to have at the side of a plot to filter strong and damaging winds.
Your plant arrives as an established 3 litre container tree ready for you to put in the ground on arrival. If you need to wait a few days before planting, keep your Eucalyptus gunnii (Cider Gum) tree somewhere out of direct sunlight and give it plenty of water initially.
In the first and second year give your tree frost protection by placing a horticultural fleece over the canopy of leaves when frost is on the cards. If you are growing your Cider Gum in a container you can transfer your tree to a greenhouse over winter.
For extra large leaves (rather than flowers), cut your stems in February or early March to around 5cm from the base every couple of years. This encourage multiple stems to emerge from the soil (rather than a single trunk) with extra large leaves than if left to grow as a tree.
If you want to add height to your garden and increase the vertical interest consider planting a tree in your garden. There are trees particularly suited for gardens which don’t grow out of proportion to your property or develop too thick a canopy that blocks out sunlight.
