Growing Calendar for Chilean Guava Ka-Pow - 9cm Potted Plant
Delivery: Mid August to Late August
Grow this British-bred, rare soft fruit like a blueberry in habit and like a wild strawberry in flavour. The Chilean guava is an edible myrtle plant much loved by Queen Victoria and hardy to temperatures as low as -10°C (14°F). Every individual fruit starts off as a pretty fragrant white flower.
Growing to a height of 1.5-2m (5-6 ½ ft) the Chilean guava plant grows well in containers or a hedge if you space plants around 50cm (20in) apart, handy if you need a natural windbreak to protect nearby tender crops. In the ground your plants are likely to reach a greater height and spread.
We recommend you plant in acidic soils if growing in containers. Being a member of the myrtle family the leaves and bark will be slightly scented. Plus you can look forward to evergreen leathery leaves to keep your kitchen garden well-furnished and ornamental through the autumn and winter.
Fruits form in big numbers all around the stem from lots of flowers that bring in beneficial pollinators like honey bees and hoverflies which stick around, feeding on pesky aphids.
This took over a week from receiving the dispatch email until the plant arrived. Quite a small plant, which would not have been a problem if it had not spent so long in transit.
