High-yielding broccoli variety producing excellent quality heads late on in the season. The head sits very high in the plant giving good air flow through the crop and so less prone to disease.
Monterey produces a great-quality heavy dense broccoli head with a fresh dark green colour and is suitable for all areas and soil types. So accommodating! And try this tasty crop as tantalising tempura for a modern twist and excellent cuisine.
We recommend you sow indoors for an earlier harvest in the year. Sow in a greenhouse from February to June. Sow seeds individually in individual module seed trays and cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost- that’s all they need.
Place in a warm environment of 10-15°C (50-60°F)- a module tray with a lid will attain these temperatures. Keep the soil moist.
As seedlings grow keep them in a bright position but shade from direct intense sunlight. Gradually accustom the plants to outside conditions for 2-3 weeks (place outdoors by day and bring indoors by night) before planting out their cropping positions 18in (40cm) apart.
Plants will benefit from fleece or cloche protection if planted out before risk of frost has passed. You can get fleece from us at Marshalls to arm you with the protection your crops need.
Plant out your seedlings from March to July when seedlings have produced approximately 4 leaves. Transplant them to their permanent positions, allowing about 40cm (18in) between plants. Firm well and keep them well watered in dry spells.
If you want to wait until you can sow outdoors, sow from April to June. Sow seeds thinly in a shallow pre-watered furrrow 1in (2cm) deep. Lightly cover seeds with a little of the soil you they are covered lightly. Thin out the seedlings after a few weeks, so remaining seedlings are 18in (40cm) apart.
Tip: Water plants generously in dry weather.
