Add this attractive, evergreen tree to your garden to add visual impact and give you edible fruit. The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) boasts good-looking, glossy green leaves every day of the year and in autumn hosts a wealth of pretty white bell flowers. These flowers become attractive orange and red fruit resembling strawberries, giving the tree’s common name.
The flowers bring in pollinating insects like bees which stick around adding animation to your garden and pollinating different flowers which give you further fruit for harvesting around the garden or plot.
Beautiful peeling bark is another of this tree’s traits. As your tree matures your strawberry tree exposes more of its bark which is chestnut to cinnamon in colour and looks almost exotic despite its more hardy nature (tolerates temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)).
Useful Tip:
Grow in urban gardens or country garden and your strawberry tree will be a success given it gets a sheltered spot away from cold draughts and wind tunnels. Grow in ericaceous compost as this tree is related to heathers and requires the same soli conditions.
