Growing Calendar for Apple Spartan - Apple Tree
Delivery: Early November to Late April
Apple Spartan is a deep maroon apple with a delicious refreshing sweet taste. The flavour of this apple is described as vinous as it has a quality to it which can be compared to wine.
It is firstly a crisp and sweet juicy modest apple. It’s flavour and it’s crimson skin as obvious clues that apple Spartan is related to the world famous Canadian McIntosh apple.
It is definitely one of the very best of the many different varieties which are related to the McIntosh. It is also one of the few that have made its way across the Atlantic to the UK. It is widely grown here and is very well suited to our temperate climate.
The Spartan apple ripens rather late in the harvesting season for apples, usually around the start of October. The Apples remain on the tree for a 2 – 3 week period once ripe which allows you to pick them just a few at a time rather than having a mass of apples at once.
It is best to enjoy them this way as although they can keep quite well, they do start to lose flavour and crispness whilst being kept in storage.
Spartan is an excellent pollinator of other apple varieties as it produces large quantities of very compatible pollen, it is also self-fertile meaning you can have it on its own. It is a simple apple and is a real delight to be eaten directly off the tree in the crisp October mornings.
Flowering Group: FG3
Years until fruiting from planting: 2
Age of tree at despatch: 2
Height at full growth: 3m/10ft
Most of our trees are delivered as bare rooted specimens with approximate height of: 3.5ft - 5ft / 105cm - 140cm depending on the variety.
In order to ensure a good pollination pick fruit trees from within the same or from adjacent flowering groups.
The vast majority of the trees we ship have been pruned and will appear trimmed.
Poor condition not happy chappie
The tree was well packed and arrived in good condition, it is healthy and is growing well. Of course with a tree it's early days yet and it will be some time before we can say it is 'excellent', but so far things are looking good. We couldn't find this variety in local shops and garden centres, but Marshalls seem to have everything!
