Extensive testing at Marshalls trial grounds has allowed breeders to come up with the 'Super 2' new cabbages - set to outperform all rivals.
Forget school dinners – the crunch and sweetness of a just-cut cabbage is unsurpassed on the vegetable plot. Good news then that even the most fashionable restaurants are putting cabbages firmly back on the menu.
Cabbage Sherwood F1
The Sherwood is one of the most versatile cabbages you can find. It's a delicious hybrid with solid, dark green heads and a short internal core. The Sherwood’s superbly sweet flavour is unparalled among other varieties. It will crop from August through to October with an excellent holding ability.
Cabbage Noelle F1
You won't have to wait ‘til Spring for this deliciously hardy 'January King' type cabbage, which will now mature as early as mid October. Its beautifully coloured leaves, deep green and almost iridescent, will be a welcome sight on the plot. Noelle has good standing ability, meaning it can be left in the ground until needed, and a fine flavour.
Sowing/ growing
- Sow seeds thinly in shallow drills 1cm deep, the seedlings may need to be thinned to prevent overcrowding.
- After five weeks, when they have four or five leaves, transplant them to their final positions.
- Water well until they become established and hoe regularly to keep free of weeds.
Tip!
Look out for Marshalls versatile new cabbage collars. Placed around the cabbage's stem they will prevent adult cabbage root fly from laying their eggs near the plant
