2009 was the first year that I grew this variety of squash, and I have been very impressed by them, they are full of flavour and very easy to grow. I grew them on top of the compost heap and they have been very prolific. I have recommended them to many friends and will be definitely growing them next year. The seeds were quick and easy to germinate and plants have been very reliable. They are delicious cut in half and roasted with the Sunday dinner.
10 Seeds were sown in early march in a heated propagator, and there was 80% germination. After potting on they were hardened off andplanted out in a frame in early may and trained up a cane wigwams. Reaching over 6 feet and cropping during august each plant produced at least four grapefruit sized fruits and cooked well with great flavour. Definitely one to grow again.
Having grown butternut squashes over the years, I decided to try Festival as an attractive alternative. I'm delighted with this variety. The plants are compact, and have set fruit readily, providing up to 7 squashes per plant, which have grown to grapefruit size with little or no extra watering. We oven-roasted our first Festival squash yesterday and it was absolutely delicious, with a colour, texture & flavour which readily rivals the butternut. If you're looking for a reliable, compact, fuss-free squash with excellent culinary qualities, then I highly recommend Festival.
