Large bulbs with deep red skin and white flesh with clearly defined red rings.
Over winters well and stores for up to 3 months.
Excellent choice for slicing and salads.
Special Note: By plating your onion sets in the autumn you can guarantee the earliest crops next year. These ensure that you have a tasty home grown crop from late spring to early summer.
I've grown Red Cross for the last 2 winters and will be growing them again this winter. Excellent success rate, very low incidence of bolting, and the only ones of my over-wintered sets to survive last year's severe winter. Excellent flavour, reasonable keeping qualities for an over-wintered onion.
We haven't grown autumn sown onions before. These overwintered well, despite lots of snow and have given a good crop of disease free, well flavoured onions. Our spring planted onions have now suffer from downy mildew, these missed that. I have just ordered more for this year.
Not very red but nice mild taste.
I grew these onions for the first time in a raised bed, suitably manured and treated in the late summer. The results were superb!! As a grower of onions from seed I was surprised by the size of these sets No bolting occured and I harvested them in May and they are keeping well.
