Perovskia Blue Spire, also known as Russian sage, is an aromatic shrub resembling lavender with its upright soft blue flower spikes in summer and then silvery stems that look lovely in winter, especially when rimed in frost.
An excellent for a dry, sunny spot or to line a path, this shrub can even tolerate poor, shallow soils and drought-conditions given that it enjoys full sun.
This variety of Perovskia has been given the RHS Award of Garden Merit as an excellent garden plant. Simply grow Blue Spire in free draining soil in full sun towards the centre of a bed or even on its own in a container on a sunny patio or balcony.
Cut a few stems to complete late-summer vase displays- the downy tall flowering stems make a lovely contrast to late-summer flowers like heleniums and rudbeckias.
Shrubs offer visual interest all year round – whether in full leaf, full bloom or with bare stems set against the winter sky.
If you want to add height to your garden and increase the vertical interest consider planting a tree in your garden. There are trees particularly suited for gardens which don’t grow out of proportion to your property or develop too thick a canopy that blocks out sunlight.
