I'm not sure if it was the year or if I did something different this year but it's the best crop ever. I've strung up loads so they should last until my Autumn sets are ready. I've grown these for years (with a name like that I've got to grow them!) but all three varieties were brilliant.

If you want prize winning onions grow Marshalls heat treated Hyred. This year I grew this variety for the first time and last weekend they came first in the onion section of our village garden show, when many people had poor onion crops. I bought the heat treated sets as part of an onion set collection priced at only £8.95 for 300 bulbs, so extremely good value. Three onions weigh 800g (1 lb 12 oz) and as the other two types of onion in the collection also performed very well I must have considerably more than 100 lb, probably nearer 150 lb! Better still, they taste as good as they look and although I didn't water them none bolted, they also have thin necks so I assume they will keep well.
