my packet of seeds said sow in August which is not what it states online. I sowed in Aug last year and it did not grow at al. I have two very tiny plants (3cm max) that have survived the winter. I wait to see if they grow. However reading other reviews I will persevere and sow in April May this year
I've grown this kale for two years and it is definitely my favourite. Last year I grew both Cavolo de Nero and Redbor and the Cavolo de Nero is more tolerant, did not need staking in my windy location and withstood four weeks covered in snow and night time temperatures of -10C. A real trouper and so easy to prepare.
This is a staple in my garden. It really earns its keep! Ready to harvest in September from a May sowing, it gives large juicy leaves that resemble spinach crossed with savoy cabbage. It's delicious steamed for about 20 mins and served with salmon. We cut the largest leaf or two from a number of plants, as we need, and the plants keep producing until Spring.
Wonderful flavour, narrow dark green leaves that cook quickly.
Sow Indoors: April-May sow in a pre watered seed tray.
Sow Outdoors: June-July Transplant when 5in (12cm) high into pre watered soil and firm in. Keep soil moist at all times.
Plant Out: June-July in rows 18in (45cm) apart and 18in (45cm) between plants in required harvest postion.
Harvest: November-April Start picking young leaves from the centre of the plant to encourage side shoots.
Keep feeding plants to prolong shooting.
August is primarily about harvesting your crops, but there are still some vegetables that can be sown and planted out!
