My AccountJerusalem Artichoke Fuseau is a larger, smooth-skinned variety, easy to peel. Try roasted with pork or as a soup. Expect about 4lb/2kg per root.
Belonging to the Sunflower family, they can be grown as an informal summer screen, before harvesting the hardy roots in winter.

I'd never tasted or grown these before but fancied something new. Very easy to grow. They produced a high attractive leafy barrier topped with yellow flowers which hid my compost heap. The tubers grew abundantly and were easy to raise. I've tried roasting, boiling and baking in Hugh Fernley Whittingstall's tart. They have a light nutty taste which seems even better when warmed up as left overs. Very easy to peel - really only need a scrub. I'll grow them again next year.
August is primarily about harvesting your crops, but there are still some vegetables that can be sown and planted out!
