Growing Pond Plants

Planting your Pond Plants

Where to grow:
To get the best results, each Pond Plant should be planted in the most appropriate position for that particular variety. These range from boggy soil at the edge of the pond through to floating freely on the water’s surface.

Marginal Plants
Plant in containers or baskets in aquatic compost.
Fill each basket or pot with aquatic compost. Allow a whole pot or basket per plant to give them room to grow without becoming overcrowded. Firm down the compost with your hands after planting and top up the pot with a good layer or gravel. Set in shallow water on shelves around the pond margins.
Alisma plantago - Height 75cm/30in. Plant in full sun or partial shade.
Iris pseudacorus - Height 1.5m/5ft. Plant in full sun.
Oenanathe Flamingo - Height 30cm/12in. Plant in full sun or partial shade.
Preslia cervina - Height 20cm/8in. Plant in full sun or partial shade.
Saururus cernuus - Height 60cm/24in. Plant in full sun or partial shade.

Native Wetland Plants
Plant direct in boggy soil or in containers set in shallow water.
For planting in containers, follow instructions above for marginal plants. They’re best planted directly in boggy or very wet soil. Remove the young plants from the packaging and plant directly into position. Replace soil and water-in.

Pond Side Plants
Plant direct in the boggy, wet soil.
Remove the young plants from the packaging and plant directly into position. Make sure the planting hole is deep enough fit the root ball entirely. Replace soil and water-in.
Acorus ogon - Height 30cm/12in. Plant in partial shade.
Houttuynia cordata Variegata - Height 30cm/12in. Plant in full sun or partial shade.
Iris ensata - Height 90cm/36in. Plant in full sun.
Lobelia Queen Victoria - Height 1m/3ft. Plant in full sun or partial shade.
Zantedeschia aethiopica - Height 90cm/35in. Plant in partial shade.

Water Lilies
Water Lilies benefit from being planted in the deepest part of the pond.
Position a single bare root rhizome in a 2 or 3 litre container or basket, filled ¾ with aquatic compost.
Cover the rhizome over slightly with aquatic compost and a thick layer of heavy gravel.
Carefully submerge the plant onto the edge, but within the water, to start with. After a few weeks once the plant has settled into its pot and is starting to show signs of growth, move it to the deepest part of the pond, ensuring it stays upright. The stems will eventually grow to reach the surface. Plant in full sun.
