Standards Fuchsias can create a lot of interest they are not difficult but do need a little patience. Beginning with a whip rather than a cutting gives you a head start as you wil have a healthy plant from a variety well suited to growing as a standard. Whips are supplied as strong, well-rooted plants in 9cm pots and are caned, un-pinched plants (this is most important!) that will be already approximately 25-30cm tall.

You would normally pinch out the growing tip of young fuchsia plants to promote bushy growth, this is TABOO for growing a standard, the growing tip MUST be protected at all costs! By leaving the tip the plant will grow straight upwards until it is the desired height then you can pinch it!
