Fennel - Florence (Sweet) Seeds

Sweet fennel is grown for its white, slightly flattened bulbs which have an aniseed flavour and for the delicate feathery foliage which is also edible. Delicious either steamed, grilled, roasted, thinly sliced or grated raw to add crunch to crispy salads.

High yielding with decorative feathery foliage that looks great in the flower border!

Produces large, thick, rounded bulbs with a distinct aniseed flavour.

Sow seeds thinly from May to June in rows of 15-18in /38-45cm apart, direct in growing site. Fennel should not be transplanted, thin seedlings when large enough to handle.

I didn't find these easy to grow at all – only four germinated (of around 40 seeds) and they are coming on very slowly.

I've grown these for 3 years on a heavy clay soil in Thames valley and they've done well with plenty of compost added. Started in root trainers, the foliage give the plot an elegant look with the light foliage. They need plenty of water come June/ July.

My wife persuaded me to try growing Fennel because supermarket specimens were so disappointing and expensive. Wow! these are so different from anything you can buy in the supermarket and so easy to grow.

Sweet Fennel is an aniseed flavoured bulb.

Sow Outdoors: May-July direct into required harvest postion in rows ½in (1cm) deep and 12in (30cm) apart in a sunny well drained spot.

Thin Out: 12in (30cm) each way.

Plant Out: Fennel does not transplant very well.

Harvest: July-October

Earth up in September or when bulbs start to form.
