Growing Calendar for Crab Apple Tree 'Butterball' 9L
Delivery: Early May to Late June
Pink-blushed white blossom stud the leaf-canopies of this ornamental apple tree in spring. In early spring the bright pink buds unfurl to reveal the snow-shower of beautiful blossom.
Yellow crab apples follow in autumn which gives your garden yet another season of interest. You can harvest the apples too and reduce to make a delicious jelly to accompany meals and seasonal cheeses.
Some varieties need a pollination partner. Not this, even when grown in isolation this variety produces lots of fruit.
Plant your tree at any time of the year but avoid planting in the height of summer during a drought or when the ground is frozen in mid to late winter. When young water mornings and evening and place a round of mulch at the base of the tree to keep the soil warm or provide some nutrients to the tree. Feed with a high-potash feed when in flower.
