Cornus ‘Midwinter Fire’ is an extraordinary variety of this much loved and very popular garden shrub. Cornus are used to inject a mass of colour into a garden in winter when there is very little colour and ‘Midwinter Fire’ is one of those varieties which seems to outperform all others in its category. Once the leaves drop in autumn a blaze of hot and fiery red and yellow stems are revealed and will turn a cold winters day into a inferno. They look great on their own, but when planted in groups they look outstanding, very few other garden shrubs can compare.
Dig a hole large and deep enough to take the plant’s root ball.
Gently tap the plant out of its pot without disturbing the soil around the roots.
Position the plant at the bottom of the hole so the plant’s crown is level with the surface and sits at the same depth as it was in the pot; make sure the roots are in direct contact with the soil.
Backfill with the excavated soil and firm in gently. Water to settle the soil around the roots.
Shrubs are easy-care plants getting better every year with the minimum of fuss.
Watering: Water regularly in the first few weeks after planting and then make sure the plants are kept moist in dry spell; but don’t overwater .Plants will send their roots down in search of moisture as they grow.
Feeding: Give shrubs a boost with a handful of granular feed hoed into the soil in spring.
Pruning: Prune in early spring to encourage young, colourful stems. Cornus Midwinter Fire doesn’t need to be cut back as hard as other cornus. Once established the plant’s naturally branching habit can be maintained by cutting some of the oldest stems hard back in spring.
Supplied in a 3 litre pot
Shrubs offer visual interest all year round – whether in full leaf, full bloom or with bare stems set against the winter sky.
If you want to add height to your garden and increase the vertical interest consider planting a tree in your garden. There are trees particularly suited for gardens which don’t grow out of proportion to your property or develop too thick a canopy that blocks out sunlight.
