We have grown Chicory Apollo for several years now. It is easy to grow and brings a sweet salad leaf at a time of year when not much is growing in the garden.
For delicious winter 'chicons'.
Sow Outdoors: May-June thinly ½in (1cm) deep in a prepared seed bed or clean module trays of firm pre watered compost. Keep soil moist at all times.
Thin Out: 6in (15cm) apart.
TO FORCE: Lift plants in October/November, cut off heads 1in (2cm) above the crown. Set 5 roots in a 10in (25cm) pot and cover with a bucket or black plastic bag to exclude all light. Maintain temperature at 10-15°C (50-60°F).
Harvest: November-December
Excellent for braising, steaming or salads.
