Camassias are among the showiest of spring bulbs. Emerging in spring-to-early summer, the Camassia bulbs sprout tall spires of starry flowers, adding height and colour to the garden.
Our Camassia Collection includes one each of:
Camassia leichtlinii caerulea
Tall stems of blue starry flowers
Camassia leichtlinii ‘Alba’
Pristine white flower spikes
Camassias will tolerate some shade and the pale flowers look superb against a dark background, lighting up semi-shaded areas. Use them as excellent border plants or as part of a meadow planting scheme with other moisture loving bulbs such as fritillaria.
Camassias bulbs are just as much at home in natural planting schemes and they thrive in damp conditions where many bulbs would struggle.
Camassias originate from moist coastal and mountainous regions of North and Western America, where they grow in damp meadows and the bulbs can naturalise to form large clumps.
Plant camassia bulbs in autumn. The small, irregularly-shaped bulbs should be planted around 10cm/4in deep into rich, moist soil. Unlike many bulbs they thrive on heavy soils.
Choose a sunny site that gets adequate moisture in spring and early summer.
After care Once planted, leave camassias undisturbed to allow the bulbs to increase naturally. Camassias are long-lived bulbs that come back every year and they will also self seed. Remove the flowers if you don’t want them to set seed.
Let bulb foliage die down naturally to divert energy back into the bulb.
