I did these as a spring sowing because of the dreadful winter and was really impressed. I had a massive crop, they won first prize at our local show and tasted very good indeed. Only very slight downside was that they didn't crop for very long, but not a problem as has cleared way for other crops!

These performed brilliantly last year from a November sowing and even gave a small second crop after i cut the main plants down. This year they will be later as , due to all the snow, I have only just got them into the ground. Fingers crossed for another good `do'.

Superb broad bean. Mine produced long pods filled with succulent, large beans in August from a late spring sowing. They have a fantastic fresh flavour. The packet suggests they can also be sown in October to overwinter, so I will try some alongside Aquadulce to see how they perform.

Broad Bean - Meteor Vroma Seeds 1030-3112

Early crops of very large beans.

Sow Indoors: February-March, singly in clean pots or modules of compost 2in (5cm) deep. Water well.

Sow Outdoors: March-April, direct into the required harvest position, 2in (5cm) deep, 8in (20cm) apart in double rows 8in (20cm) apart. Leave 18in (46cm) between each double row. Keep soil moist at all times.

Plant Out: Indoor raised crops in April 8in (20cm) apart in double rows 8in (20cm) apart. Leave 18in (46cm) between each double row.

Harvest: June-July

Run strings both sides along the double row at 12in (30cm) and 24in (60cm) from the ground, supporting stems as they grow. Pick young for best flavour.
