With no chemical solution for treating clubroot in brassicas, the only way you can guarantee disease-free crops is by growing resistant varieties – and we have a great collection for you.
One of the most destructive diseases to brassicas, clubroot is a fungal infection that causes the roots to swell and reduce the uptake of water to the plant, resulting in severely stunted growth. The fungus can survive in the soil for up to fifteen years – so even crop rotation won’t help – and can be spread through infected soil on shoes and tools.
We are delighted to be able to offer you an increased range of clubroot resistant varieties of brassicas in a special value collection – guaranteed to be clubroot-free!
The collection consists of 64 plants, 16 of each variety:
16 x Cabbage Kilaton- A club root resistant variety with exceptional storage potential and keeps its colour for longer periods too. Harvest: October - January.
16 x Cauliflower Clapton- Another good variety with major benefits to gardeners. It has good erect growth so takes up less space and produces well protected dense white curds. Harvest: August - October.
16 x Brussels Sprout Crispus- This is a superb variety with vigorous growth and excellent standing ability. The small tight buttons are dark green with good flavour. Harvest: September - Nov.
16 x Cabbage Lodero-first club resistant red cabbage, maincrop variety, stores well, Cutting: October-November.
Planted in our brassica tunnels (Netted enclosures), they took a fortnight to recover and start to look OK (stand up). Lost 3 sprout plants and one of the red cabbage so not a big loss overall. Probably luckily no frost during the period.
Please unpack the plants as soon as you receive them and sit them in a tray of shallow water if they appear to have dried out in transit.
