I received this set promptly, and after a few days chose to provisionally grow in pots in the greenhouse whilst I prepared the soil with onion fertilizer. In just one week the garlic bulbs have all established very good root growth and very healthy 3 -4 inch shoots - Planted out properly today and expect 2 dozen very good plants and bulbs next year. The onions showed much less sign of growth in terms of visible shoots with only a few appearing to have grown yet - however when planting out today it was evident that the bulbs had begun to establish good roots. In terms of flavor etc I would only be able to comment next year after harvesting. Overall I have scored this set as 4 stars purely because the only disappointing part was that only 21 yellow moons arrived and one being clearly dead and rotting means that at outset 20% failed as someone was unable to count.

I had grown onions from sets provided by Marshalls for more than forty years until last year when I was unable to do so. My wife has commented each week how she is really missing onions with a bite, some flavour, or even that make her eyes water! Onions from farm shops, greengrocers, and supermarkets have all failed to meet her requirements (and I'm bound to admit that she is right) so I am particularly pleased this autumn to be able to start planting onion sets from Marshalls once again. If you want taste, grow Marshalls onions.
