My AccountA great delicacy, steam or boil and serve with melted lemon butter or hollandaise sauce.
Beautiful enough to grow in the flower border. These are perennial plants and will produce more heads with each successive year.
Sow under glass, February-March. Transplant in June to crop autumn and the following May. Sow direct in April for cropping the following year.

Slow to get started, but once established produced loads of fruit. Needs staking if windy site.
My plants were grown from seed three years ago and still thrive, even though I garden in Scotland and 350 m above sea level. I get a bumper crop of artichokes every summer - large and tasty - and overwinter them by cutting back and covering with bracken. One or two in the border of any garden look pretty, even if you don't have a lot of space, as well as tasting good. Highly recommend.
A great delicacy at home in the flower border too!
