Growing Calendar for Apple Katy - Apple Tree
Delivery: Early November to Late April
Katy is one of the best early/mid-season apple varieties. It is very reliable and produces large quantities of very attractive red coloured apples. It is reliable in any garden and grows into a neat shape meaning that it very rarely requires pruning.
The spring blossom of Katy is very attractive, the blossoms last very long which makes it an excellent pollinator for other apple varieties.
Katy’s blossoms rival even crab-apples for the beauty of its blossom. The apples are medium-sized, they are usually pink/red – bright red in colour upon a light green/yellow background.
Katy’s apple flesh is a pale cream colour, it has a firm and crispy consistency although not quite as crispy as later varieties of apple. The same as most early apples the flavour of Katy is sharp with a hint of strawberry. It is particularly juicy and when eaten fresh from the tree the juice splashes everywhere as you bite into it.
The apples are very versatile, if you have too many to eat, which is usually the case with this heavy cropper, the variety is excellent for juicing and can even be used for baking. Unusually for a popular eating apple, Katy can be used for producing a single-varietal cider.
Katy is a popular apple for children and the size makes it an ideal healthy school lunchbox snack, although you might think that children would only eat very sweet apples, in tasting tests they seem to enjoy the slight sharpness of Katy.
Bred in Europe Katy is well suited to the UK climate and produces delicious apples from August. The variety is an excellent variety all round and is particularly good choice for those who are new to growing apples.
