Apple Ashmeads Kernel Bare Root Fruit Tree

  • Catalogue Code 1070-9384
  • Pack Contents: 1 x Bare Root Fruit Tree

Apple Ashmead’s Kernal is an old nondescript variety dating back to the 1700s. Although it’s not an entirely attractive looking apple, with a dull green colour, russet and an irregular flat shape, Ashmead’s Kernal has a unique flavour, some say it’s reminiscent of pear drops.

Ashmeads Kernel is a very old traditional English russet apple. It remains popular for its distinctive pear-like flavour which is quite different from most other apple varieties. Although often considered as a connoisseur's dessert apple, Ashmead's Kernel is actually quite versatile.

It can be used for cooking, or sliced in savoury salads, and it keeps very well in a cold store. Ashmead's Kernel is also becoming increasingly recognised for its juice, which adds an interesting fruity component to cider blends.

For this reason it has been a popular variety for over 2 centuries and although primarily used as an eating apple, it can also be used for cooking and juicing.
